Next Gen (2018) takes place in a futuristic society where robots are an integral part of everyday life. The plot of Next Gen revolves around a rebellious teenager named Mai, who harbors a deep hatred for robots due to the impact they have on her family.

Her life takes an unexpected turn when she meets a state-of-the-art robot named 7723. Together, they form an unlikely friendship and embark on a mission to stand up against school bullies.

Orion and the night entities

In Orion and the Dark, 11-year-old Orion faces his irrational fears with the unexpected help of Dark, the embodiment of his deepest dread. Directed by Sean Charmatz, the film follows Orion as he grapples with anxiety about rejection by his crush, Sally, and a myriad of other fears.

After a blackout, Dark appears in Orion’s bedroom and offers to show him the wonders of nighttime to help him overcome his fears. Reluctant at first, Orion embarks on a journey with Dark and encounters various funny nighttime entities like Sleep, Insomnia, Quiet, Unexplained Noises, and Sweet Dreams.

As they travel, Orion learns to confront and befriend his fears, but a comment about preferring light to darkness causes the night entities to abandon their duties, leaving Dark alone and vulnerable.

While Orion and the Dark is not inherently a comedy, there are many elements in the the movie that are hilarious. For example, the sketches of Orion’s fears are very funny, as well as the interactions between the many night entities. 

The film ultimately delivers a heartfelt message about courage, acceptance, and the power of confronting one’s fears.

The Mario Movie Poster

The Super Mario Bros. Movie, directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic and released in 2023, follows Mario and Luigi, two Brooklyn plumbers, who find themselves in separate fantastical worlds after being sucked into a Warp Pipe. 

Mario aids Princess Peach in battling the evil Bowser, while Luigi is imprisoned. The film explores themes of friendship, courage, and the importance of family bonds. 

This film is pure comedy. A particular character who you need to watch out for and who is the real star of the movie (pun intended) is Lumalee, the gloomy star that reminds the prisoners that their fight is futile and that life is pointless. Lumalee is both cute and frightening! 

Overall, Mario and Luigi’s journey highlights the power of unity and determination in overcoming challenges. As they find acceptance and a sense of belonging in the Mushroom Kingdom, they demonstrate that with trust and support, anyone can become a hero.

Marcel the Shell with Shoes on Movie cover

Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, directed by Dean Fleischer Camp and released in 2021, portrays Marcel, an anthropomorphic seashell, living with his grandmother, Connie, and filmmaker Dean. 

Marcel’s internet fame prompts a search for his lost family, accompanied by Dean. However, as Marcel’s popularity rises, he grapples with unwanted attention and Connie’s declining health. Despite his hesitations, Marcel agrees to a 60 Minutes interview in hopes of reconnecting with his family. 

A small anthropomorphic seashell with shoes on exploring the complexities of life is inherently funny. Add on his quirky behaviors, facial expressions and his unusual way of being a shell navigating a human-sized world, and this film is sure to cause some laughs. 

In addition, themes of family, fame, and coping with loss are explored throughout the film.

Klaus

In Klaus, a 2019 animated film directed by Sergio Pablos and produced by The SPA Studios for Netflix, we follow Jesper, a lazy young man sent to a remote town to prove himself as a postman. In the town, divided by feuding families, Jesper discovers a reclusive toymaker named Klaus.

Together, they start delivering toys to children, inspiring kindness and ending the town’s feud. As Jesper’s deadline approaches, tensions rise, but a heartfelt gesture changes everything.

Meanwhile, the elders plot against Jesper and Klaus. Amidst twists and challenges, Jesper learns important lessons about friendship and responsibility. The town transforms into a joyful place, with unexpected bonds forming. As years pass, Jesper’s connection with Klaus deepens, leading to unexpected revelations.

As you may have imagined, Jesper’s initial struggles to adapt to the unfamiliar environment and the local customs lead to humorous moments. Along with Jesper’s antics, The film uses slapstick humor and visual gags, like mumbling reindeer, to get laughs. 

The film concludes with a touching message about the spirit of Christmas and the power of giving.

Ruby Gillman Movie Poster

Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, directed by Kirk DeMicco and co-directed by Faryn Pearl, released in 2023, portrays Ruby, a 16-year-old Kraken girl navigating the complexities of high school life in Oceanside. Throughout the film, themes of identity, acceptance, and the importance of family are explored as Ruby navigates friendships, confronts betrayal, and discovers her strength. With the help of her mother, Agatha, and her grandmother, the Warrior Queen of the Seven Seas, Ruby trains to harness her powers and confront the looming threat of the vengeful mermaid queen, Nerissa.

This film blends humor with a teenage Kraken trying to fit in in a human world. One particularly funny scene involves a sea captain hunting a deadly baby kraken- it is hilarious. 

In the end, the film delivers a powerful message of resilience, unity, and the strength found in embracing one’s true self.

Vivo, directed by Kirk DeMicco and released in 2021, follows Vivo, a music-loving kinkajou, who embarks on a journey to deliver a love song from his late owner, Andrés, to the retiring singer Marta Sandoval. 

After Andrés’ sudden passing, Vivo teams up with Gabi, Andrés’ grandniece, to fulfill his mission. As they face challenges and adventures along the way, including encounters with the Sand Dollars and a python named Lutador, Vivo and Gabi form a deep bond. 

Vivo incorporates comedic elements into its musical numbers. The lyrics, choreography, and performances contain humorous puns and visual gags that add to the funny nature of the film and the characters themselves.

In addition, the interactions between Vivo, Gabi and the Sand Dollars are particularly funny- especially Gabi and Vivo’s escape scene. 

With themes of love, friendship, and the power of music, the film highlights the importance of perseverance and embracing new connections.
