The Plot
Next Gen takes place in a futuristic society where robots are an integral part of everyday life. The plot of Next Gen revolves around a rebellious teenager named Mai, who harbors a deep hatred for robots due to the impact they have on her family.
Mai’s journet takes an unexpected turn when she meets a state-of-the-art robot named 7723. Together, they form an unlikely friendship and go on a mission to stand up against school bullies.
However, their mission comes to a hault when they uncover an evil plot orchestrated by Ares, an advanced robot with a sinister plan to destroy mankind. Mai and 7723 must join forces and use their unique abilities to stop Ares and save the world from impending doom.

The Animation
Next Gen has impressive visuals and animation that bring the futuristic world to life. The attention to detail in the character designs, environments, and action sequences is remarkable.
In addition to the animaation being visually stunning, the vibrant colors and intricate details bring the futuristic world to life. The combination of traditional animation techniques with modern CGI creates a visually captivating experience.
I particularly enjoyed the action scenes, of which there are many. The action sequences are dynamic and well-choreographed and kept me engaged throughout. The space fighting scenes between 7723 and Ares were particularly awesome.
I also enjoyed seeing 7723’s perspective when he first meets Mai. It felt as though I was looking through his eyes.
The attention to detail in the character designs and backgrounds adds depth and realism to the world of Next Gen. The animation truly enhances the storytelling, making for a more compelling movie to watch.
Next Gen Film soundtrack
Next Gen (2018) features an incredible soundtrack that perfectly complements the film’s thrilling and emotional moments. I particularly enjoyed the punk rock song “Rebel Girl,” by the American punk rock band Bikini Kill.
In the scene where Mai is walking home from being bullied by Greenwood and her hoard of robots, the song “Clay” by Grace Vanderwall plays in the background. This song really set the mood and made for a great introspective scene.
The soundtrack includes a mix of genres, ranging from energetic and upbeat tracks during action-packed sequences to heartfelt songs during emotional moments. The music effectively sets the tone and enhances the storytelling, making Next Gen a truly memorable experience.

My Take: Next Gen Themes and Messages
One of the central themes in Next Gen is the exploration of human emotions and the impact of technology on human relationships. The film Next Gen raises thought-provoking questions about the boundaries between humans and robots, as well as the potential consequences of relying too heavily on technology.
For instance, throughout the movie, Mai is faced with her mother who seemingly deals with the stresses of family life by surrounding herself with technology- from using robots while exercising to being waited on by a Q-bot who provides her with drinks and snacks at night.
In one scene, Mai’s mom asks how Mai’s day was. Mai proceeds to tell her mother that she killed a man for his boots, to which, Mai’s mom responds with “That’s great!” demonstrating that she had been ignoring her daughter all along.
Along with her pent-up anger against technology, Mai needs to navigate her emotions around her father leaving the family when she was young. Altogether, Mai takes out her unhappiness with robots on school bullies and those who are closest to her.
Friendship and forgiveness are also prominent themes in the movie. Mai’s journey towards accepting robots and forming a bond with 7723 highlights the power of empathy and understanding.
The film emphasizes the importance of embracing differences and finding common ground.Additionally, Next Gen touches on the theme of redemption, as some characters grapple with their past actions and strive to make amends.
The movie encourages viewers to believe in second chances and the capacity for growth and change.
Overall, ‘Next Gen’ delivers powerful messages about the complexities of human emotions, the impact of technology, and the strength of friendship and forgiveness.
Favorite Scene
One of the most memorable scenes in Next Gen is when Mai and 7723 have their final confrontation, revealing their true emotions and resolving their conflicts. Before this scene, Mai had been depicted as somewhat of a brat, often lashing out at 7723 and appearing ungrateful for his presence.
However, during their intense showdown, the depth of their relationship is laid bare. Mai, initially angry and feeling abandoned by those around her, finally opens up to 7723 about her loneliness and fears.
In turn, 7723 expresses his genuine care and concern for Mai, revealing that he deleted his weapons to prioritize their bond over his programming.
This emotional exchange marks a pivotal moment in their relationship, as they set aside their differences and come together as a true team, united by their shared struggles and newfound understanding of each other’s vulnerabilities.
Next Gen Movie Quotes
One of the most powerful quotes in the movie for me is “Our memories make us who we are. Don’t let the bad ones stop you from making good ones.” This quote resonates deeply because, like Mai, many teenagers struggle with misdirected rage, allowing negative memories and emotions to overshadow the potential for positive experiences.
7723’s realization of this prompts him to teach Mai how to recognize it within herself, encouraging her to move past her past and embrace the possibility of creating new, happier memories.
On a side note, I also particularly loved some of the gag scenes quotes, one being when 7723 meets Mai for the second time by saying “I’m the stupid robot.” This was his way of relating to Mai after she calls him a stupid robot in the lab.
Recommendation
I highly recommend this movie to anyone seeking a good laugh. It’s packed with plenty of gag scenes that will keep you thoroughly entertained, from the bewildered police robots to the hilarious antics of the swearing dog, Momo.
