In 1516 Rome, Leonardo da Vinci faces scrutiny from the Papal Court for his celestial observations and study of the human body. Despite papal orders to cease, he's appointed a military engineer due to the defeat at Marignano, but he convinces the Pope to pursue peace. Invited to the French royal court, Leonardo meets Marguerite and continues his quest for the soul, aided by her. However, his focus shifts to inventions for King Francis's festivities, sidelining his Ideal City project. Falling ill, Leonardo reveals his groundbreaking research to the Papal Court, while his assistant Cecco disagrees. The film culminates with Leonardo's presentation on the Solar System, hinting at his mortality, echoed by lyrics implying a life well-lived, possibly indicating his journey's end as he metaphorically journeys into the Milky Way.
